We hope that all the activities in our new office will support us contribute to improve energy and natural resources governance for sustainable development in Indonesia.

On this occasion, we would like to reflect on our journey, celebrate every small step, and reflect on the hopes and challenges ahead. 2023 has become a particular year for us, where PWYP Indonesia has carried out many activities, advocacy, and campaigns as a form of our contribution to encouraging improvements in the governance of the energy and natural resources sector, not only in Indonesia but also at regional and global levels. Of course, this can only be realised with the support of all agencies, organisations, and partners working with and collaborating with PWYYP Indonesia.

PWYP Indonesia continues to oversee the implementation of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiatives (EITI) initiative through the election of civil society representatives in the EITI Indonesia Multi Stakeholders Group (MSG), providing input to the EITI Indonesia MSG Forum Consultation Meeting, collaborating with the EITI Indonesia Secretariat on Extractive Transparency Day 2023; a series of PWYP Knowledge Forum (PKF) entitled Optimizing the Implementation of the 2023 EITI Standard in Promoting Gender Equality in a Just Energy Transition in Indonesia and the Role of EITI in Supporting the Anti-Corruption Agenda; encourage openness of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission Data in the extractive sector; as well as Reflections on Civil Space in the Extractive Sector and Natural Resources in the EITI Implementation Framework in Indonesia, which also oversees Indonesia's preparations for the validation process which will be carried out in early 2024. PWYP Indonesia also actively participated in the EITI Global Ceonference in Senegal.

In the mineral and coal mining sector, PWYP Indonesia highlightsthe importance of the Government controlling and reducing coal production; encouraging encouraging disclosing contract/license documents to prevent illegal mining in Indonesia, urging the Government to be consistent regarding its mineral downstream strategy, Highlighting Cases of Alleged Corruption in Nickel Ore Mining. Confirm that the mineral and coal mining sector is prone to corruption in the "State capture" category. In the context of the mineral transition, PWYP Indonesia developed a study within the framework of the program “Engaging Communities in a Just Energy Transition through the Implementation of Indonesia's Extractive Industries Transparency Initiatives (EITI)” which aims to ensure that civil society and local communities, especially those in North Morowali Regency which is located in Central Sulawesi, have a better understanding of the impact of the energy transition on the extractive sector and their livelihoods, especially about regional revenues from ongoing and planned projects, based on data revealed by EITI Indonesia. PWYP Indonesia, together with the PWYP network in Asia Pacific, also established the Asia-Pacific Transition Mineral Accountability Working Group (APTMA-WG), which aims to advocate for the rapid elimination of fossil fuels that do not sacrifice communities and critical ecosystems that hold minerals needed for the future low carbon.

On the issue of energy transition, PWYP Indonesia has held a National Convening of Civil Society Communities and Organizations: "Encouraging a Just, Inclusive and Transformative Energy Transition in Indonesia, and a Civil Society Regional Meeting for a Just Energy Transition which resulted in a call for a Rapid, Democratic Energy Transition, Empowerment and Justice in the Region. PWYP Indonesia and several civil society organizations were also actively conducting campaigns ahead of the implementation of COP28 at ClimateActionWeek They are presented at the Asia Pacific Climate Week 2023 in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. PWYP Indonesia also published a policy paper on Mainstreaming Gender Equality, Disability, and Inclusion Social (GEDSI) in a Just Energy Transition in Indonesia.

Apart from that, PWYP Indonesia, together with other civil society organizations, also actively overseeing the Open Government Partnership Indonesia (OGI) initiative through 2 actions, namely the Action to Optimize the Implementation of Beneficial Ownership Data Disclosure and the Action to Develop a One Data System for Natural Resources and the Environment that Guarantees Data and Information Openness Licensing and Spatial Planning. PWYP Indonesia will also participate in the 2023 Open Government Summit in Tallinn, Estonia.

In the context of strengthening the Secretariat and Coalition, PWYP Indonesia has also completed a series of Financial Training for Non-Profit Organizations. It has also encouraged efforts for organizational independence through the PRECISE Program resulting in several new business units owned by the National Secretariat and PWYP Indonesia members.

We look forward to 2024 with new enthusiasm and hope to continue contributing while facing various challenges in the energy and natural resources sector, especially in the political year 2024. We will continue to learn and adhere to the vision, mission, values, and fundamentals of governance while pursuing new ideas and innovations and seeking collaboration with various stakeholders. Once again, we need suggestions, input, criticism, and support from all collagues, friends, and partners.

Regards,
Aryanto Nugroho
National Coordinator
