As one of our valued Partners and Network, we are pleased to share 2nd edition of PWYP Indonesia Newsletter 2023, which contains the latest news and information updates from our coalition throughout February 2023. You could find our advocacy efforts, campaigns, activities, products, and many others here.

PWYP Indonesia's various activities and involvement in several moments and issues, such as responding to the Job Creation Perppu, primarily related to the article providing 0% royalty incentives for coal businesses; and putting pressure on the government not to relax the obligation to downstream minerals. PWYP Indonesia also carried out capacity building for CSOs in Central Sulawesi related to Just Energy Transition, including organizing PKF related to justice issues in Energy Transition in Indonesia.

Training Enhancing Community Participation in Improving Mining Governance and Just Energy Transition in North Morowali

Kolonodale – Publish What You Pay (PWYP) Indonesia collaborates with IDEA Yogyakarta, organized training for local communities “Increasing Community Participation in Improving Mining Governance and Just Energy Transition in North Morowali” in North Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi. The activity, which was held on February 6-7, 2023, in Kolonodale, North Morowali, was attended by around 23 participants, who came from five surrounding villages, namely Tiu Village, Maralee, Bungintimbe, Molores, and Towara, North Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi Province.

Publish What You Pay (PWYP) Indonesia held another PWYP Knowledge Forum (PKF) entitled “Justice in Indonesia’s Energy Transition” online on February 24, 2023. PKF is a discussion and knowledge-sharing forum organized regularly by the PWYP Indonesia coalition to improve understanding and capacity, as well as develop public discourse related to issues, topics, and policies in the natural resource sector.

A Pathway towards Just Energy Transition in Indonesia

Energy transition has been widely discussed in several global initiatives. In 2016, 191 parties signed the Paris Agreement as a manifestation of cooperation in combating climate change and improving investment for sustainable low-carbon development. As one of the countries taking part in this international treaty, Indonesia has a strong commitment to combating climate change by gradually making renewable energy one of the main development agendas. In 2015, the Government of Indonesia (GoI) pledged to reduce emissions from 2020-2030 by 29% (unconditional) up to 41% (conditional) against the 2030 business as usual scenario, an increased unconditional commitment compared to 2010 pledge of 26%. The notion of negative externalities from coal-based energy usage giving global retention on transition into a more sustainable and clean energy.
